October

October has been a busy month for us. Here are some of our activities.

We visited Portsmouth. It is across the Elizabeth River from Virginia Beach. It is an old shipping port dating back to the colonial period. A lot of old houses from the 19th century are still around.

Light house ship. They function like a lighthouse but they go an anchor over a shallow area. We visited the inside of this lighthouse ship.

Shipping ports are still very active on the Elizabeth, which feeds into the Chesapeake Bay.

We also went hiking at Northwest River Park, It is down near the border of North Carolina.
(we forced fin to do all the heavy packing)

We went to a local farm to buy pumpkins for Halloween

Fin can sleep anywhere...

Last week we went to Washington D.C. We decided to go camping on the way up (to break up the drive) in Richmond. The weather in Virginia Beach has been very mild this fall. We had record temps this week--89 degrees a few days ago. So the evenings have been 50's and 60's. Not so when we went camping at Pocahontas State Park. It dropped to 31 degrees and we froze. We all shivered through the night. No one slept well (perhaps Fin who was in my sleeping bag tucked underneath me but even she shivered). We all woke up tired and cold. There are no pics from this experience because at first light we broke camp and took off. We did reach D.C. safely--and warm.

Our hotel

The D.C. subway is very deep in the ground. These escalators give you a sense.

Chinatown where we ate dinner

White house at night (Fin was excited)

Connor rode this simulator at the air and space museum.

When we returned home. On Tuesday night at 1AM our van was hit by a crazy driver. He hit our van which hit our neighbor's car which hit our Matrix. So two of our cars were hit. The van was totaled. The matrix is drivable and we will get an estimate on Monday.

I have a lot to say so hopefully I remember it all.....

1) I love Fin's little back pack and the fact that she can sleep anywhere. I remember falling asleep under the couch at the house in Jacksontown.

2) @Jen, you are looking good momma! In those tight black pants! You're gonna have to tell me your secret.

3) what a crappy way to end the vacation....was it a hit and run? or do they know who did it?

4) I think it's great all the amazing memories you guys are making as a family. Even the one where you all froze at night camping. ;-)
